Tourmaline is the name of a group of named for several different but closely related minerals. The name comes from the Sinhalese word "turamali" referring to the color spectrum of this gemstone. Tourmalines can be found from red to green and from blue to yellow, often have two or more colors and change their color when the light changes from natural to artificial light. No two tourmalines are exactly the same creating an endless variety of looks, and suitable for all moods. It is said to be the gemstone of love and of friendship.

Some tourmaline gems, particularly the pink to red colored stones, are subjected to irradiation to improve their color which is almost impossible to detect but does not impact the value. Heavily-included tourmalines, such as rubellite and Brazilian paraiba, are sometimes clarity enhanced rendering a gemstone which is worth much less than a non-treated one.
