Alexandrite

As one of the official stones of June and the 55th year anniversary, Alexandrite has captured and captivated the interest of collectors and connoisseurs since its discovery in the Ural mountains almost 200 years ago. Alexandrite is the brand of chrysoberyl which changes color as a function of the light source; looking green in daylight and red under incandescent light.

In 1834 a color changing gemstone was found in the Urals's Emerald mines in Russia and was later named Alexandrite in honor of Alexander II and is found in Brazil, Madagascar, Myanmar, Russia, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

Alexandrite changes from green to red, mauve or brown in incandescent light and is available in many synthetic variations on the market. Due to it's color changing qualities Alexandrite is difficult to photograph. The color also varies as a result of geographical location and time of day. Retail replacement cost for a 1 carat alexandrite could be anywhere between $150 to $10,000 per carat. The intensity of the color change and the attractiveness of the colors is the most important factor in determining the value of an alexandrite. The cut, clarity, and weight are also critical factors.

Natural alexandrites are available in a complete range of colors from brownish to bluish green in daylight to pink, purple, red or brownish red under incandescent light. Overall the best alexandrites are probably from Brazil but exceptional stones are can also found in India, Tanzania, and Madagascar.

Alexandrite is a tough (hardness 8.5), hard, and durable gemstone that doesn't require any special care.

Cleaning: Jewelry containing Alexandrite can be cleaned using the ultrasonic bath or steam without any adverse effects.
